Your duty statuses show what type of work you’re doing and help GPSTab track your time correctly under the FMCSA Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
Updating your status regularly keeps your logs accurate and helps you avoid violations.
Duty Status Types
There are four standard HOS duty statuses in GPSTab:
Off Duty: You’re off work - not driving or performing job-related tasks.
Sleeper Berth: You’re resting in the truck’s sleeper area.
On Duty (Not Driving): You’re working but not driving - for example, loading, unloading, fueling, or doing inspections.
Driving: Automatically recorded by GPSTab once your vehicle moves faster than 5 mph.
How to Change Duty Status
You can update or add a duty status in several ways:
Duty Buttons on the Main Screen: Tap the duty status you want (Off Duty, Sleeper, or On Duty), add a short note if needed, and press Save.
Plus (+) Button: Tap the ( + ) icon to insert a new status for a past time. Choose the correct duty type, set the time range, add a note, and save it.
Edit (Pencil) Button: Use this to adjust or correct an existing non-driving ( Off Duty, On Duty or Sleeper) status within the last 14 days.
Please NOTE! Driving status cannot be edited, adjusted, or inserted into the driver's log.
Always remember to save your changes and certify your logs daily to keep your records up to date.
HOS Break Rules
The FMCSA requires several key breaks to manage fatigue and ensure safety:
10-Hour Break:
You must take at least 10 consecutive hours Off Duty, in Sleeper Berth, or a combination of both before starting a new shift.
30-Minute Break:
After 8 cumulative hours of Driving, you must take at least a 30-minute break.
This can be Off Duty, Sleeper Berth, or On Duty (Not Driving) - any status except Driving counts toward the 30-minute break. This can also be done at any time before your 8 cumulative hours of Driving, if needed.
34-Hour Restart:
You can reset your weekly (70-hour/8-day) driving cycle by taking 34 consecutive hours Off Duty, or a combination of Off Duty and Sleeper Berth time.
Following these rules helps prevent violations and keeps your logs compliant with FMCSA standards.
Always make sure your GPSTab app is connected, and your statuses are correct before driving - your safety and compliance depend on it.
